The Sugar-Skin Connection

Monday, June 22, 2026 • ~1 min read

Good morning! Let's talk about something I rarely see discussed: how sugar ages your skin. When you eat sugar, it triggers a process called glycation. Sugar molecules attach to collagen and elastin fibers, making them stiff and malformed. The result? Sagging, wrinkles, and dull skin. This process accelerates as we age, which is why diet matters more as we get older. Signs sugar is affecting your skin: • Loss of firmness and elasticity • Dull, yellowish complexion • Fine lines appearing faster • Skin that doesn't "bounce back" • Increased breakouts How to reduce glycation: • Limit added sugars (the obvious step) • Read labels — sugar hides in "healthy" foods • Choose complex carbs over refined ones • Eat antioxidant-rich foods (berries, leafy greens) • Consider supplements like carnosine or alpha-lipoic acid I'm not saying never eat sugar — that's unrealistic. But being mindful makes a difference. When I reduced my sugar intake, I noticed my skin looked firmer within weeks. Today's action: Check the sugar content in one "healthy" food you eat regularly. You might be surprised! Stay tuned for another one of Karine's ageless skin tip tomorrow in your inbox at 7 am. Have a great day!
